Opening the event, the all-star big band, emerged from “Jazz Festival at Conservatory” and consists of students from four colleges (including Kunitachi College of Music, Showa Academia Musica, Shobi University, and Senzoku Gakuin College of Music), collaborates on stage with the acclaimed ensemble from the prestigious Juilliard School of Music. Young talents from Japan and the U.S. bring their vibrant performance and fresh energy to the audience.

A long-awaited collaboration between the two great musicians come to realize on stage this time at the festival. Known for her impassioned performance, the great violinist Naoko Terai performs together with Argentinian musician Pablo Ziegler, a former pianist of Astor Piazzolla’s band, to deliver the energetic and elegant fusion of jazz and tango.

A trailblazing musician and the world’s top unparalleled pianist, Herbie Hancock has supported Tokyo Jazz Festival as music producer from 2002 to 2005. Returning to the event this year with the best and pre-eminent musicians in his band, he brings excitements to the audience to celebrate the festival’s 15th anniversary.
